Fortunately the death of a child or young person during their school years is relatively uncommon.  However, when a death does occur, school peers, whānau and communities want to mark the passing of the child or young person in a respectful way.

Schools report that current guidance on how best to approach funerals and memorials of a current or former student, is a) outdated and b) insufficient, to help them navigate the complexity of this situation.

The intended outcome of this study is to create a co-designed guideline for schools to increase capacity to plan and host funerals and commemorations for students where this is agreed between the school and family.

We are inviting you, as a bereaved parent, caregiver or whānau member to share your perspectives on on the experience of planning a funeral or commemoration for your child, 5-18 years, who has died for any reason. We are sorry for the pain of this experience; an experience shared by one of the research team members.

This ANONYMOUS survey focuses on what worked, and not worked well in your lived experience, and will take around 20 minutes to complete.
